HELPING TO RESTORE A LANDMARK
On a daily basis, Midwestern Industries is approached by various companies looking
for a solution to their screening problems. Whether it’s scalping rocks
and debris in grinding rooms, sifting clumps from fine powders in the pharmaceutical
industry, or removing lint and waste from laundries, Midwestern evaluates each
situation independently and offers personalized screening solutions based on
our vast knowledge of the industry.
Getting to hear first-hand what problems companies are experiencing is one of
the reasons Midwestern attends so many trade shows throughout the year. The
ability to spend time with a customer and listen to what they want to accomplish
with their screening applications is invaluable.
While attending the 1999 ConExpo-Con/Agg Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Midwestern
was approached by John Richardson with a unique application. Richardson was
the superintendent of a special project that needed to screen a rare type of
quartz going to be used in the restoration of the Baha’i House of Worship
temple, located in Wilmette, Illinois near Chicago.
The spectacular building is only one of seven located throughout the world.
It is the responsibility of the Baha’i National Center to preserve the
structure, completed in 1953, making it stronger and able to withstand the harsh
elements of Chicago’s ever-changing weather.
Set to improve upon the 60-year-old concrete mix, the Baha’i National
Center and research consultants had many variables they needed to consider before
settling on one process. The new concrete mixture would be needed throughout
the restoration of the 167-foot-tall bell-shaped dome with an ornate lace pattern,
1,000 precast steps arranged in nine pie-shaped sections, and a remarkable garden
featuring nine electronically-controlled fountains.
Once the concrete mixture was decided upon, it was time to consider the necessary
process to produce the quantities needed to complete the project. After settling
on the rare quartz, it needed to be crushed then screened.
Midwestern Industries used its full-scale test facility, located in Massillon,
Ohio, to determine the right screener for the job. Working closely with the
Baha’i National Center, Midwestern obtained freshly crushed quartz directly
from the crushing company and performed tests resulting in accurate feed rates
and appropriate wire meshes.
With this information in hand, the Baha’i National Center prepared their
facilities in Wheeling, Illinois to handle the entire crushing and screening
process in-house. The Temple Concrete Studio installed Midwestern’s three-foot
by five-foot MEV with five screening decks. Due to the amount of dust created
by the fine particles, the machine was outfitted with total enclosures and a
stand. For even distribution of material across the screening surface, a material
distributor was also added.
With the machine in place and fully functional, the Temple Concrete Studio runs
3 tons of quartz aggregate through the screening machine each day, five days
a week.
Midwestern Industries and its qualified sales staff were able to help the Baha’I
National Center with their screening needs. By working closely together and
utilizing Midwestern’s screening experience they are able to preserve
a wonderful structure so many can visit and worship for centuries to come.
